Brief History of Cowboy Hat From 1860s

Cowboy hat was named by John Batterson Stetson. Around the years 1860s, cowboy hat established close relationship with heroism. Then it was adopted by the militaries as a part of uniform. And it was worn by the great warriors in television programs. After that, it became popular among the sporty native heroes of America. Nowadays, cow hat is stands for a kind of fashion which symbolize the traditional spirit of sturdiness.

It is said that Stetson originally made a wide-brimmed hat with high crown that was made from common fur of horse hides. That hat was multifunctional. The wide brim could protect face from the sun and the high crown could shield water, fan the fire and drive the horse. Due to the almighty functions, this hat got large popularity. The name cowboy hat comes from its acceptant popularity cowboys. The first hat that Stetson sold is generally known as “ten-gallon cowboy” at the price of five dollars in Central City. Some doubted the credit of Stetson’s invention in that the ranchers of Mexico and Texas were habituated to use the wide trimmed fur hats called “Sombreros” in the middle 19th. The cowboy hat is widely welcomed in Spain as well.

In the 1860s, the dominant style of cowboy hat is the pork Pie. The hat was made from soft materials. It was not expensive. The particularity was that it was featured with the telescope crown and a 3″ brim. It was until the late 1870s when the cowboy hat became commonly worn. The 4*4 was the most popular style of the rural American from 1790 to 1880. These earlier cowboy hats had the distinguishing traits to those of nowadays. They had three pieces of lining. The cowboy hat now is popular in names such as boss of the plains, trapper and planter. Another typical style of cowboy hat was Hamburg which had a letter M-shape crown.

With the development of the manufacturing technology, cowboy hats are produced by machine instead of hand in the 20th century.
